The Canadian Junior Hockey roster was released Thursday.
While the roster is headlined by forward Nathan McKinnon, who is expected to be the top pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, two Detroit Red Wings prospects, goaltender Jake Paterson and defenseman Xavier Ouellet, both made the roster.
Ouellet was drafted by the Red Wings in the second round (48th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. The native of Terrebonne, Quebec currently plays for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Ouellet has posted 25 points (5 goals, 20 assists) for the Armada this season. Hockey's future projects Oullet to jump to the AHL next season.
Paterson was drafted by the Red Wings in the third round (80th overall) of the 2012 draft. A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Paterson has played with the Ontario Hockey League's Saginaw Spirit since he was 16. Paterson has posted an 11-12 record with a 3.49 GAA and a .901 save percentage with the Spirit in 28 games this season. Paterson has a ways to go to if he wants to move up the ladder, as he will most likely have to compete with Tom McCollum, Petr Mrazek, and possibly Jordan Pearce in Grand Rapids.
Team Canada will begin play for the 2013 World Junior Championships December 26 in Ufa, Russia.
For the record, Don Cherry believes that Team Canada will win the gold medal.Tags: Detroit, Detroit Red Wings, Hockey, NHL, Xavier Ouellet
