If 2012 was a sign of things to come for the Grand Rapids Griffins, then 2013 should be just as good, if not better.
The Griffins closed out 2012 with a 3-1 victory over the Rockford Ice Hogs Monday night. The win also moved the Griffins into first place in the Midwest Division.
The Griffins opened the scoring at 2:01 of the first period. Jeff Hoggan was initially denied by Rockford netminder Carter Hutton, but Luke Glendening controlled the rebound before Landon Ferraro put the puck in the net for his tenth goal of the season.
Rockford answered at 6:14 in the second after Dylan Olsen intercepted a bad pass from Adam Almquist and fired a shot past Petr Mrazek.
Tomas Tatar made it 2-1 at 16:02 of the second after he fired a wrist shot past Hutton for his 12th goal of the season and 76th of his AHL career. Tatar added another goal at the midway point of the third by beating Hutton with a slapshot.
Mrazek earned his fourth straight win and 11th of the season with a 28 save performance. He also picked up an assist on Tatar's second goal of the night.
The Griffins will open up the 2013 portion of the schedule Friday night at home against the explosive Oklahoma City Barons. Puck drop is set for 7 pm.
