A five-goal outburst in the second period, and a solid defensive performance helped the Grand Rapids Griffins overpower the Oklahoma City Barons 5-2 Friday night.
The Barons opened the scoring in the first period when Anton Lander fired a shot past Petr Mrazek at 9:09. That shot was only one of five total from both teams in the first period.
The Griffins cranked up their offense in the second by first scoring three goals in a span of 3:34. Jeff Hoggan scored his fourth goal of the year at 1:20 after knocking in a rebound past Barons' netminder Yann Danis. Nathan Paetsch added his second of the year at 3:42 after taking a feed from Brent Raedeke and firing a slap shot from the blue line past Danis to make it 2-1.
The Griffins made it 3-1 at 4:54 after Tomas Tatar dished to Riley Sheahan, who would beat Danis between the legs for his eighth goal of the year.
Landon Ferraro added a shorthanded breakaway for his 11th goal of the year with a shorthanded breakaway at 11:48. Ferraro leads the AHL with five shorthanded points this season.
Sheahan added his second of the night at 17:40 after he knocked a loose puck in.
Danis was pulled after the second and replaced by Olivier Roy to start the third. Justin Schultz added a goal at 14:43 to make the final margin 5-2.
Mrazek finished with 17 saves to earn his 12th victory of the year.
The Griffins open a four game road trip beginning tonight against the Chicago Wolves. Puck drop is at 7 pm.
