The injury bug did not leave the Detroit Red Wings alone during the lockout.

The Detroit Free Press' Helene St. James reports that Red Wings defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo injured his shoulder during the Spengler Cup in December. The initial report is that he could be out 2-3 weeks, but once the team doctors take a look at him, more will be known.

With Colaiacovo out, expect Jakub Kindl to get more ice time on the blue line. Reports have surfaced that Brian Lashoff, who is currently with the Grand Rapids Griffins, is likely to be called up to start the season to be the seventh defenseman. If GM Ken Holland were to sign someone, the following options (along with more) are current urestricted free agent defensemen who could be signed for a cheap price (via CapGeek):

  • Brett Clark
  • Chris Campoli
  • Colin White
  • Kent Huskins
  • Jim Vandermeer

Colaiacovo signed with the Red Wings this past September.
