Detroit Red Wings fans will have to wait until the 2013-14 season to see Nicklas Lidstrom's number 5 raised to the rafters at Joe Louis Arena.
“We want to have a night for Nick like we did for Steve Yzerman,” Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland said to the Detroit Free Press. “To try to put everything together in six weeks — we’re trying to get the business back up and running."
“It’s a big deal to retire Nick’s number. We want to do it right.”
When Yzerman's number 19 was retired in January 2007, it was a prettty big event. Expect something similar for Lidstrom.
Lidstrom's number 5 would be the seventh umber to be retired by the Red Wings, joining Terry Sawchuk (1), Ted Lindsay (7), Gordie Howe (9), Alex Delvecchio (10), Sid Abel (12), and Yzerman (19).
