The Detroit Red Wings defensemen core has turned into a MASH unit.
Defenseman Brendan Smith is the latest to go down. Smith sustained a sprained shoulder Saturday after taking a hit from Columbus's Derek MacKenzie. Smith was diagnosed with an AC sprain in his right shoulder, and will miss 3-4 weeks.
With Smith out, Brian Lashoff will likely take his place in the lineup.
The good news is that fellow defenseman Ian White is expected to return to action this week after sustaining a leg laceration nearly two weeks ago. Carlo Colaiacovo (shoulder) has resumed skating, but remains two weeks away from a return.
In other injury news, center Darren Helm (back) will have a bone scan Tuesday to determine how his injury has healed. Helm was expected to have made a return by now, but his return is still far from certain.
Also, winger Mikael Samuelsson (groin) said that he hopes to return to action later this week.
