The Detroit Red Wings were looking to continue their winning streak, while also simultaneously continuing the losing streak of the St. Louis Blues.
The Blues would have none of it, as they fought back from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-3 in overtime after Alex Steen beat Jimmy Howard with a wristshot 52 seconds into the extra period.
The Red Wings jumped on the board at 2:17 of the first after Patrick Eaves corralled a loose puck off of a faceoff in the offensive zone. Eaves then fed the puck to Tomas Tatar, who flipped a backhand shot past Blues' net minder Jake Allen for his first goal of the season. Drew Miller made it 2-0 at 7:54 after he collected a pass from Jordin Tootoo, and he beat Allen with a wrist shot for his first goal of the year.
The Blues got on the board at 18:54, courtesy of a shorthanded goal from Patrik Berglund. TJ Oshie stole the puck from Damien Brunner, outraced Justin Abdelkader, and fed Berglund who sent a wrister past Howard.
Vladimir Tarasenko continued to be a pest for the Wings, as he would score on a power play at 7:12 of the second. Chris Stewart would then score on a breakaway less than two minutes later after Alex Pietrangelo fed him with a long pass, and Stewart fired a backhander past Howard to give the Blues a 3-2 lead.
Pavel Datsyuk tied the game at 12:39 using one of his old tricks. Datsyuk got the puck behind the net, and played possum with it before banking a shot off of Allen's leg for his sixth goal of the season.
Neither team had much of an opportunity to score in the third period and overtime until Steen's game winner.
Allen made 15 saves in his first NHL start. Howard finished with 21 saves.
The Red Wings were outshot 25-18. They mustered only one shot each in the third period and overtime.
NOTES: This was the fourth time in 13 games that the teams have played each other this season. They will play again at Joe Louis Arena April 7…Former Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom was in attendance. He received a loud ovation from the crowd when he was shown on the jumbotron.
